Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I am excited to be back and working with your child.
Expectations: I am expecting each child to come to school prepared and ready to learn. While at school we want them to follow the rules of:
 Be Safe
 Be Responsible
 Be Respectful
The classroom teachers and I have discussed with the students what it looks like to follow these rules in my classroom as well as throughout the school so they know what is expected of them. 
Rewarding Positive Behavior:
  5th Grade - I use punch cards for each student. Once the punch card is filled up, the student can pick something from the bonus box and a note is sent home so the parents can recognize their child’s positive behavior.  I can customize what the children earn punches for according to their IEP goals. If I notice one student who has been working particularly hard on something that does not come easy they may earn a punch.  Or if I see that one student hasn’t shouted out for two minutes. Maybe a student has begun to slow down and check through his or her work – and not just race through to be done.  All of these small milestones deserve recognition. As the students’ progress I inform them that I am raising my expectations in order to earn a punch on the card. The students rise to the challenge and take ownership of their own behavior in the classroom.
4th Grade - I am linked to Class Dojo.  When I see your child in the classroom or in my resource room I award points according to the categories given within Dojo.  In the child's Dojo report you can see which teacher is awarding which points.  When the students earn enough points they can choose to pick something out of my bonus box or get the reward from their classroom teacher.

Offense 1: Verbal Warning

Offense 2: Teacher student conference/4th Gr. loss of Dojo points
Offense 3: Student Reflection with parent signature required
Offense 4: Call Home
Offense 5: Principal’s Office

Homework: Students will be responsible for homework from their general education teacher, unless I am their Reading, Writing, or Math teacher. If I am their teacher in one or more of those areas it is indicated on Infinite Campus. For those students I will send home a homework packet on Monday and it is due Friday. However, in order to encourage students not to wait to the last minute to complete their work I offer extra credit if they turn it in before Friday. Another advantage to this system is if I have a chance to grade the assignments and they made many errors I can give the packet back for them to redo before a grade is entered. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me with a phone call or email.

About Me

Some information about myself… I have been a general education, special education resource and self-contained classroom teacher for 26 years.  I have a degree in Psychology, specialty in children, certifications in general and special education and a Master’s Degree in Administration in Education.  I also earned my National Board Certification in Special Education. 

I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, go Bears, Blackhawks, and Cubbies!!!  My family and I moved to Arizona four years ago, gladly trading in shoveling snow for sunshine.  Although I miss my pizza and hot dogs, I love Arizona, it's my HOME!
